Kaunas became the temporary capital of Lithuania, and the first President of Lithuania was elected in this city on 4 April 1919. In hope that the historical capital Vilnius will be regained quickly, only a temporary residence seemed to be needed for the President. This palace, built back in 1846, served the purpose.
